The Milton Eagles took two out of three games from the Woodstock Wolverines this weekend to win the series and advance to the second round of the state playoffs. After losing game one on Friday afternoon 8-4, the Eagles won game two on Friday night 8-3. That set the stage for the third and decisive game of the series on Saturday afternoon, which Milton also won by the score of 8-3. With these two victories, Milton's season record now stands at 24-5.
In game one, Milton got great starting pitching from Jason Richman (5-2/3 IP; 9 K; 3 BB; 4 hits; 6 runs/1 earned) and took a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning. Unfortunately, the bullpen did not arrive in time, and the defense made some untimely errors, which allowed seven unearned runs to score on the night (including one in the second inning and six in the sixth inning). The Eagles had 13 hits on the night but only managed to score four runs. The Milton offense was led by Sean Ryan Brophy (3 for 4, 2 runs), Dalton Ewing (2 for 4, 3 RBI, run), Dalon Farkas (2 for 3, 2B), Dylan Cease (2 for 4, 2B), and Jack Thompson (2 for 3, BB). Lucas Herbert (1 for 4, 2B, RBI), and Ryan Gridley (1 for 4, run) also contributed.
Facing the possibility of elimination after unexpectedly dropping game one, the Eagles sent Matt Phillips to the mound in game two. Phillips responded to the challenge by pitching a complete game and allowing only one earned run over seven innings (7 IP, 6 K, 6 hits, 4 BB, 3 runs/1 earned). The Milton offense also stepped up in a big way in game two! Led by Lucas Herbert (4 for 4, HR, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 3 runs) and Dalton Ewing (3 for 4, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Milton pounded out eight runs and quickly eliminated any doubt about whether the Eagles would extend the series to three games! The Milton offense also got contributions from Jack Thompson (1 for 4, 2B, RBI, run), and Sean Ryan Brophy (1 for 4, run).
Facing their second elimination game in less than 24 hours, the Eagles turned to Payton Smith to start game three. Smith proved that he, too, was equal to the challenge, as he responded with a complete-game victory of his own (7 IP, 6 K, 2 BB, 4 hits, 3 runs/2 earned). The Milton offense was led by Dalon Farkas (2 for 3, 2B, 4 RBI), Alex Schnell (2 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 runs), and Eric Farrell (2 for 4, RBI), with contributions by Dalton Ewing (1 for 4, 3B, RBI, run), Will Drennon (1 for 2, RBI, run), Dylan Cease (1 for 3, BB, 2 runs), Sean Ryan Brophy (1 for 4, run), and Lucas Herbert (BB, run).
The Eagles will play the North Cobb Warriors at Milton Field in round two. The series begins with a double-header on Wednesday, May 9th, with a tentative start time of 4:00 PM. Stay tuned to this website for updates later in the week. Milton defeated North Cobb 5-0 (on March 7th) in their only meeting during the regular season.
Milton Baseball invites everyone to come out and support the team during the playoffs, ESPECIALLY THE MILTON STUDENTS, who were great during the Woodstock series!

Friday night was Senior Night at Milton and the Eagles ended the regular season in style with a 7-4 win over the Centennial Knights. The seniors shined on the night, but a freshman stole the show! Lucas Herbert, Milton's freshman catcher, hit two homeruns and had four RBIs to help Milton in the victory. With the win, Milton improves its record to 22-4 overall and 11-1 in the region..
Matt Phillips, the winning pitcher, had another strong start for the Eagles, striking out eight and allowing just two runs on four hits and four walks over five innings. Senior Max Marshall pitched a scoreless sixth inning and hit one batter but did not allow a walk or a hit. Senior Graham Johnson pitched the seventh inning, allowing two runs on three hits. Johnson did not walk anyone and recorded three strikeouts, including two straight to end the game.
Milton took the lead in the first inning and never trailed. Ryan Gridley and Alex Schnell both singled. Lucas Herbert, who played left field tonight, then hit an opposite-field homerun to give Milton a 3-0 lead.
Centennial scored a run in the second inning to cut the lead to 3-1, but Milton got that run back plus one in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Eric Farrell played third base and had a great night at the plate. Farrell lined a one-out triple into the right-field corner to get things started. Gridley followed with a triple to center field, driving in Farrell. Sean Ryan Brophy then drove in Gridley with a sacrifice fly, making the score 5-1 in favor of Milton.
Herbert led off the third inning with his second homerun of the night, a bomb to left-center field, which extended Milton's lead to 6-1.
Centennial scored another run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 6-2.
In the sixth inning, senior catcher Nick Bray drew a one-out walk. Thomas Welborn entered the game as a courtesy runner for Bray and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Farrell then drove in Welborn with his second hit of the night, increasing Milton's lead to 7-2.
The Class AAAAA State Baseball Tournament begins on Friday, May 4. As the number one seed in Region 6, Milton will host the Woodstock Wolverines, the number 4 seed from Region 5. Woodstock finished the regular season with a 16-10 record and was 6-6 in their region. All rounds of the state playoff involve a best two-of-three series. The higher seeded team, or the team designated as the host team on the predetermined brackets (if the teams are equal seeds), will host all three games. A doubleheader is required on the first day of each round of the playoff series. The host team will be the home team in the first game, and the visiting team will be the home team in the second game. There will be a coin flip to determine the home team if the series goes to a third game.
The Eagles encourage all of their fans to come out and support the team during the playoffs. Go Milton!

The Milton Eagles got another strong pitching performance tonight from Jason Richman and defeated the West Forsyth Wolverines 3-2, improving their record to 21-4 overall and 10-1 in the region. Richman pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just two runs on five hits and one walk over seven innings. Only one of West Forsyth's runs was earned.
Prior to tonight's game, the Eagles welcomed youth-league players from Wills Park, Hopewell, and Webb Bridge. Bill Lusby, President of the Alpharetta Youth Baseball Association, and Dr. Jeff Fester, Vice President of the Hopewell Youth Association, threw out the ceremonial first pitches.
In the first two innings, Milton got singles from Steven Reale, Lucas Herbert, and Dillon Cease. But the game remained scoreless until the third inning. Dalon Farkas lined a triple to center field. He then scored on a groundout by Ryan Gridley, which gave Milton a 1-0 lead.
West Forsyth scored one run in the fourth inning to tie the score, but Milton reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Cease reached on a two-out, two-base error and scored on a line-drive double by Sean Ryan Brophy, making the score 2-1 in favor of Milton.
In the fifth inning, Farkas led off with a single. Gridley and Reale each reached base as a result of being hit by a pitch. Payton Smith then drove in what would prove to be the winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field, extending the Milton lead to 3-1.
Cease singled again in the sixth inning, but Milton was unable to bring him to the plate.
West Forsyth picked up an unearned run in the seventh inning and appeared ready to do even more damage. But with two on and nobody out, Richman recorded his seventh strikeout of the night. He then got the next batter to hit a groundball, which looked like the perfect double-play ball. But Milton got only one out on the play and threw the ball away, allowing a run to score and sending the potential tying run to third base. The next batter hit a flare over the first baseman’s head, near the foul line but too shallow for the right fielder to make a play. Out of nowhere, second baseman Ryan Gridley sprinted toward the foul line and made a diving catch for the final out of the game!
Join us at Milton Field tomorrow night for the final game of the regular season, as the Eagles host the Centennial Knights. Pre-game ceremonies honoring the seniors on the Milton baseball team will begin at 5:40 PM.
